031: How To Make Your Podcast Stand Out with Carli van Heerden

Welcome to the premiere of our new podcast series! Based on the Founder’s Corner, a segment in our We Edit Podcasts newsletter, this series is all about giving listeners actionable advice on everything related to the business of podcasting, from growing your podcast to making big mindset shifts.

For our first episode, we delve into what it takes to truly make your podcast stand out in a sea of microphones. With over five million podcasts out there to choose from, the thought of trying to get your podcast noticed, let alone listened to, can feel overwhelming. And while this may seem scary, it can also be a cause for inspiration, because it demonstrates that there genuinely is space for everyone in the podcast sphere. So join us today, as we unpack tried and tested tips for standing out, and discover how you can embrace your individuality, hone your craft, authentically connect with your audience, and much more!

Takeaways From This Episode:

When choosing the artwork for your podcast, consider what you can do to stand out from the crowd. Don’t just follow the current trends. And if you’ve been in the game for a long time, maybe it’s time for you to consider rebranding and embrace a bold new aesthetic!

The next time you welcome someone new onto your show, be sure to do your research so that you don’t just cover the same things they’ve talked about on other podcasts. Check out their past episodes, spot what they normally talk about, and then brainstorm new topics so that you can be the odd one out and bring something entirely new to the table!

An important step that will help you stand out is to adopt a totally unique marketing strategy. Now, being the ‘goose’ in a ‘duck-duck’ marketing world can be tricky, because you need to think outside the box, but also stay on trend! The key is to promote it on as many platforms as possible using rich sound bites, great quality, audio, video, and everything in between.

The next thing you should consider is being outrageous, rather than ordinary. Don’t worry! We’re not saying that everyone should be outrageous podcasters. But that shouldn’t stop you from getting inspiration from other unconventional sources, like Alex Cooper’s work in Call Her Daddy or Cameron Hanes’s Keep Hammering Collective.

We all have the storytelling superpower within us, especially as children. Unfortunately, with adulthood, many of us tend to lose touch with telling stories, which is the worst thing you can do as a podcaster! Not only is storytelling a central part of being human, but it’s also what makes exceptional brands, individuals, and podcasts, stand out.

Storytelling is also a wonderful way to harness the power of relatability. When you tell honest relatable stories, it can make your listeners truly feel seen and create lasting connections with your audience, while also drawing in new members.

Quotes:

“Storytelling is absolutely key when it comes to separating great brands and great individuals from the rest of the crowd.” — Carli Van Heerden [0:07:36]

“Every story that you tell should make your listeners feel seen. Ultimately, it will draw in so many more new listeners to your show, and create those lasting connections with your audience.” — Carli Van Heerden [0:08:11]

“Find that relatability and you’ll become a better podcaster, better storyteller, and ultimately become that headphone in the sea of microphones.” — Carli Van Heerden [0:08:24]
